The Issue

In 2017, Ghana’s National Malaria Control Programme (NCMP) and Ministry of Health (MOH) developed an Android application intended to facilitate registration of households and distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for the 2017-18 mass campaign. The App was developed to help prevent human error during data capture for campaign registration, to provide real-time data reporting, and to improve performance monitoring and accountability and high-quality data.

Our Approach

Tropical Health studied the app and compiled a list of functions and test cases, then conducted testing for each module of the app (Monitoring, Registration, Distribution, and Web Interface). User experience was tested to assess ease of finding data and information via search and menus, and to test filtering systems. Scores were generated for ease of use, learnability, information retrieval, look-and-feel, and content organization. Scenarios were executed with different user roles and multiple browsers and devices. Bugs were identified and flagged for followup by the developers.

Our Findings

Tropical Health found that most of the planned tasks were successfully executed, particularly the Registration module. No critical or major bugs were identified, and medium and cosmetic issues to addresss to improve usability were identified with recommendations on how to resolve these. The report was provided to the Ghana NMCP and MOH app developers, who used the results to make further improvements. Ultimately, over 15 million ITNs were delivered in the 2018 campaign with the NetApp.
